Watermelon, Strawberry, and Kiwano Fruit Punch

Let me be among the first to say what you’re all thinking, what the?

No really, what is it? Well, ladies and gentlemen, this strange-looking fruit happens to be a kiwano melon (A.K.A  African horned cucumber, jelly melon, blowfish fruit, and many other names).

Since moving here to Chile we’ve come across many new varieties of fruits and veggies, some good, some bad, and some just plain weird. My dad likes to bring home obscure items that no one has a clue about and give them to me to figure out what they are and to do something with them. These spiky orange things are the latest addition to our list of discoveries. They have been sitting in the fridge for over a week waiting for me to deal with them. Hey, I’ve been really busy, give me a break.

In the past I have had some bad experiences when just diving in on these types of things so I’ve learned my lesson to do a little homework first. It’s the smarter thing to do. Anyway, after some time on the good ol’ internet I found out what they were and that they are said to taste like a love child of zucchini, cucumber, kiwi, and lime (and they totally do). I also read that they are famous for an appearance in Star Trek (they do look very other-worldly) and that they should not be refrigerated (oops).

When you cut into them they are full of this green goo that is very decidedly stuck onto the seeds and the spikes are not particularly sharp but you probably don’t want to step on one of these barefoot. As to my opinion of these fruits, I’m definitely not overly fond of the smell (very squashy) and I probably would not choose to eat them on their own.

However, they were not as bad as I was afraid they might be and they made a pretty good addition to this drink. Plus, you have to admit, they served a very good use as a conversation piece that also doubles as really cool cups. Don’t they look cool?

I realize, of course, that most of you won’t have access to these, so for those of you who still want to make some punch I’d suggest replacing the kiwano with 2 kiwi’s. You could use cucumber and maybe even zucchini if you’re feeling adventurous, but personally I’d go with the kiwi.


So now if you ever do come across some of these fruits you will have a basic knowledge of what they are and a great use for them.

Watermelon, Strawberry, and Kiwano Fruit Punch

Prep Time 15 minutes
Servings 6 cups


  • 2 cups seedless watermelon cubes
  • 1 kiwano melon just the insides (or 2 kiwis, peeled)
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries stems removed
  • 2 limes juice from
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup or agave nectar to taste


  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
  2. Serve chilled.
